Are Up-and-Over Garage Doors Worth It?

When buying a garage door, you’re faced with a number of different options, and it can be difficult to know which one suits your needs the best. Up-and-over garage doors are found around the world, but are they worth the money?

Up-and-over garage doors: an introduction

It’s fair to say that up-and-over garage doors are seen as ‘traditional’ garage doors by many, simply because they are one of the earlier iterations of the garage door. Before the onset of automation, up-and-over garage doors were unmatched in the market.

The functionality of up-and-over garage doors is explained in the name. The door is pulled up using a handle in the middle, and when a certain point is reached, the user can then push it ‘over’ – along a track – to store the door in the ceiling of the garage.

Pros

Choice

Up-and-over garage doors are available in a variety of designs and styles, from wooden doors to aluminium designs.

Price

They’re often cheaper to buy, too, so they can suit people who are looking for a new garage door on a particularly tight budget.

Automation

Despite being an older type of garage door, up-and-over doors can be fitted for automation.

Cons

Parking

Up-and-over garage doors open outwardly at first – this means that cars cannot be parked too close to the door. For people with smaller driveways or larger vehicles, this can be an issue.

Awkwardness

Although these doors can be designed for automation, the functionality is nowhere near as smooth as that of a roller garage door or a sectional garage door.

Weight

If you can’t automate your up-and-over garage door, then you’ll have some heavy lifting to do every time you want to open it. This can be cumbersome and annoying to have to do on a daily basis.

There are some advantages to an up-and-over garage door, but they aren’t specific to that type of door. Roller and sectional garage doors share the same advantages, plus more – their opening and closing mechanisms are a lot smoother, and their vertical opening style means that there’s no restrictions on where you can park, or how much space is left in your garage.

Rollerdor are one of the UK’s leading garage door manufacturers, supplying made-to-measure garage doors of the highest quality for customers around the country. If you’d like to know more about our various types of garage door, or want to discuss the manufacture of your new door, contact us today.
